A Preventive Approach to Orthodontics

Phase 1 Interceptive Orthodontics, is designed to help address potential orthodontic issues in children between the ages of seven and nine.

By taking a preventive approach to treating crooked teeth and a misaligned jaw or bite, we can avoid major problems later, such as impacted teeth or speech problems. Additionally, we can create a better path for adult teeth to emerge.

Our dentists recommend children have their first orthodontic assessment at the age of seven. This is the ideal time to identify issues with tooth development or jaw growth, since they can be more easily treated at this age.

During the initial assessment, we will thoroughly evaluate your child's dental health to determine whether they could benefit from interceptive orthodontic treatment.

If your child is a good candidate for Phase 1 orthodontics, your dentist can explain which specific orthodontic options suit your child's needs, and provide treatment.

The Goal of Phase 1 Orthodontics

Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is used to correct tooth alignment and bite issues early, to stop them from developing into larger problems.

During Phase 1interceptive orthodontic treatment, we are focused on the development of your child's growing smile. The purpose of this treatment is to ensure that their jaw has adequate space and their teeth are growing in correctly. This not only keeps the primary teeth from crowding, it also helps the adult teeth grow in effectively.

If your child needs Phase 2 intervention, such as braces or Invisalign, following their Phase 1 treatment, it can help make the treatment easier and shorter.

Phase 1 Interceptive Orthodontics Treatment Options

To help guide children's teeth into their proper position, interceptive braces and oral appliances can be used. If more advanced orthodontic issues are present, we may use more intensive treatment options to ensure that your child is on the right track toward a straighter, healthier smile.

Upper jaw expansion, known as maxillary expansion, is an orthodontic treatment that we use to correct misalignment, tooth overcrowding, and breathing issues. We also offer sleep apnea evaluation for our young patients who have trouble with their sleep.
